What are smart meters?
Smart meters replace traditional gas and electricity meters and automatically send meter readings to your energy supplier. This means you no longer need to submit manual meter readings, helping to ensure your bills are based on accurate usage.
Smart meters also give you access to our smart tariffs, which may allow you to use energy at cheaper times of the day and could help you save money on your energy bills.
We install second-generation smart meters, known as SMETS2 meters, which are designed to remain smart even if you switch energy suppliers.
How do I get a smart meter?
You can book a smart meter appointment through your online account or by calling our trusted metering partner, SMS, on 0330 135 9954.
If you have a three-phase electricity supply or a larger gas supply (U16 or above), please contact us directly so we can arrange an appointment with an appropriately qualified engineer.

Why might I not be able to get a smart meter?
In some circumstances, we may not be able to install a smart meter straight away. This could be because you have:
- A complex metering arrangement
- A CT (Current Transformer) electricity connection
- Equipment that requires a specialist engineer or additional work before installation
If this applies to your property, contact us, we'll explain the options available to you and any next steps required.
I already have a SMETS1 smart meter
If you have a SMETS1 smart meter, we'll contact you when your meter becomes due for replacement.
We'll upgrade your meter to a SMETS2 smart meter, ensuring you continue to receive smart meter functionality as older SMETS1 communications technology (2G and 3G networks) is phased out.
